This example demonstrates accessible syllabus design with proper structure, clear language, and accommodation information. Make sure to follow the University of Arizona's Syllabus Policies and Recommendations as you are putting together your syllabus.

Course Description

This course introduces students to digital accessibility principles, guidelines (WCAG 2.2), and practical implementation strategies. Students will learn to evaluate and remediate digital content including websites, documents, and multimedia.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the legal and ethical foundations of digital accessibility
  2. Apply WCAG 2.2 success criteria to evaluate digital content
  3. Remediate common accessibility barriers in documents and web pages
  4. Use assistive technologies to test digital content
  5. Advocate for inclusive design in professional settings

Required Materials

  • Textbook: "A Web for Everyone" by Sarah Horton & Whitney Quesenbery (available in print, ebook, and audio formats)
  • Software: Screen reader (NVDA or VoiceOver—free, provided)
  • Browser extensions: WAVE, axe DevTools (free)

Best practices for accessible syllabi

  • Use heading structure: Help students navigate with H2, H3 tags
  • Include accommodation information prominently: Don't bury it at the end
  • Provide contact information in multiple formats: Email, phone, office hours
  • Describe building accessibility: Entrance locations, elevator access
  • Use tables appropriately: Only for tabular data with proper headers
  • Link to resources: DRC, tutoring, writing center with accessible links
  • Offer materials in multiple formats: Note availability of audio, large print, digital
  • Be specific about due dates: Include day of week and time zone
